A little guidance for a little more ease.

Installation and first launch
The public release is 1.0.0 / Build 7 for Apple silicon. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. The file is DockQuit-V1.0.0.7.dmg. Its SHA-256 is cf9787aad9340a47b149342f73337402fd482bc3657a89f9ca05c2c1994bfd4a.
- Open the downloaded disk image and drag DockQuit.app into Applications.
- Open DockQuit from Applications. Keep macOS security checks enabled.
- Follow the onboarding link to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, then enable DockQuit.
- Return to the app. Permission status updates automatically. Use the menu bar icon to turn either quit method on or off independently.
Two ways to quit
Hover, then click ×
Move your pointer over a running app in the Dock. Pause briefly, then click the × that appears. This requests that the entire app quit, rather than closing just one window.
Middle-click
Press your mouse scroll wheel on a running app’s Dock icon. Your mouse or its driver must send standard middle-mouse events. With a trackpad or a Magic Mouse without a middle button, use hover and × instead.
Permissions
Accessibility permission lets DockQuit read Dock icon information and positions and handle the relevant mouse actions. If middle-click is unavailable, follow the in-app guidance to check Input Monitoring and reopen DockQuit.
The app does not need Screen Recording, Full Disk Access, or Automation permission. It does not read window contents or record keystrokes.
If macOS shows permission as enabled but the app still reports it as missing, quit DockQuit, remove the old permission entry, and add the current copy in Applications. Keeping a consistent installation location helps.
Why did an app stay open?
DockQuit requests a normal quit. The app may have a save dialog open or be busy. Check its own prompts first.
If it has not quit after about 12 seconds, DockQuit shows a status in its menu. It will not force-quit the app or interact with save dialogs for you.
Which icons are excluded?
Finder, Trash, folders, apps that are not running, and targets that cannot be identified reliably are excluded. DockQuit also excludes itself.
System and device compatibility
The public download requires macOS 14 or later and is Apple silicon only. Hands-on testing used Apple silicon, macOS 26.3.1, and a single display.
There is no Intel download. The same validation has not been completed for multiple displays or other macOS versions. The minimum system requirement is not a claim that those environments have been fully tested.
Launch at login and uninstalling
Launch at login is off by default. You can enable it in DockQuit’s menu.
To uninstall, disable launch at login, quit DockQuit, and move it to Trash. You can also remove its Accessibility and Input Monitoring entries in System Settings.
